This weekend, Hazewinkel (BEL) was home to the last tournament in the ECA cup. The cup is a measurement for national teams on where they stand, to test against other teams and to get even more experience.

The cup is a mix of 3 tournaments (1 in France, 1 in Germany and 1 in Belgium). Points are awarded to national teams based on their result, and the sum is made to see who wins the ECA cup.
Because there is a European Champs later this year, it’s a nice preview of what to expect.

Many people in different disciplines wax their boat to gain more speed or any other advantage. Does this waxing actually help or is it just a waste of money?

We’ll have to make a distinction between the different disciplines whether or not waxing helps. Starting off with racing, the main purpose of waxing the hull of your kayak is an increase in speed. Several tests have concluded that waxing by itself doesn’t really change much, however, if your boat has light scratches and dents, waxing the hull can make the surface smoother, which in turn results in more speed.

What should be the membership fee of a canoe & kayak club?
It’s a simple question that sprouts a lot of debate on many meetings in clubs throughout Belgium.

There are a lot of different clubs in Belgium. Some started as a group of friends, paddling together and have grown to a club, recreational, little rules and a lot of member participation.
At the other end of the scale are the competitive clubs, supplying well organized training schedules, a lot of mentoring and usually a bigger subscription fee.
Of course, there are also a lot of clubs that hoover somewhere in between. They tend to do both recreational and competitive kayaking, supplying their members with basic gear and enabling training sessions for beginners and a little more seasoned participants.

The different kayaking disciplines with a competition have usually been an amateur sport with very little people making any money from competing.
There are some exceptions with the Olympic disciplines like canoe sprint, but most sports tend to be run by volunteers, competed in by hobbyists and if they have any price money it’s not sufficient to make it worthwhile just for the money.

This can be a good or a bad thing.

It’s a big challenge to get kids engaged into sports, but it’s an even bigger challenge to get them into kayaks and keep them thrilled, excited and basically have fun.

Usually, at the age of 5 or 6, kids are starting to develop enough motor skill to start out with some sports. Mainly football (soccer), athletics (running), gymnastics, swimming and other ball games are popular for beginning sports.
Once the child grows more muscles and general fitness, they have generally tried different sports and around the age of 10 to 12, kids are mostly engaged in 1 or 2 sports and a member of a club or federation.

The ECA Cup is a series of 3 tournaments where national teams participate. The ranking of each tournament is used to make a final ranking for the ECA Cup.
Belgium did not participate in the first tournament. The second one was this weekend in Saint Omer (France) and Belgium participated with a Men and a Men U21 team.

Belgium Men had 6 group games.
The first game, against The Netherlands, was lost with 6 – 2. The Netherlands ended 2nd in the competition. The next game vs Italy was lost with 4 – 1. The Italians ended up winning the tournament. So the first 2 games were though.
