Statistics behind canoe & kayak in Flanders

Some people have no idea about the statistics about canoe & kayak in Flanders.
This post will shed some light on some of them. All data used in this post is from 2014.

First of all, there were 3248 active members in 40 clubs. If you take into account that Flanders has about 6 million inhabitants, that’s about than 0.05% of the people. There is a lot of growth potential.

Here is a list of active members for each province:
Antwerp: 1332
West Flanders: 735
East Flanders: 625
Limburg: 397
Flemish Brabant: 159

If we have a look at the biggest clubs (top 10) we get the following (% of total):
GEKKO – Gent (East Flanders) : 283 (8.7%)
NWC – Neerpelt (Limburg) : 214 (6.6%)
KCCM – Mechelen (Antwerp) : 199 (6.1%)
TKC – Turnhout (Antwerp) : 176 (5.4%)
KSKZ – Zwevegem (West Flanders) : 160 (4.9%)
KNRS – Niel (Antwerp) : 147 (4.5%)
GKV – Geel (Antwerp) : 128 (3.9%)
AKC – Edegem (Antwerp) : 114 (3.5%)
KSKCL – Leuven (Flemish Brabant) : 112 (3.4%)
KKK – Kasterlee (Antwerp) : 104 (3.2%)

Total members in the 10 biggest clubs : 1637 (50.4%)

As you can see from these numbers, a club has 81 members on average, but there are some big clubs and some very small ones. Over 50% of the members are in one of the 10 big clubs in Flanders.

If you compare this to 2013, nothing much has changed. Total members were 3255 in 40 clubs.
